Promoting Industrial Engineering and Management with Specialization on Sustainable Manufacturing
The workshop on applied research to analyze the German-Turkish business requirements was hosted by the German Embassy (Eberhard Pohl) in Istanbul in cooperation with the Turkish-German University (Izzet Furgac, Halil Akkanat), Fraunhofer Society (Kai Mertins, Holger Kohl), German-Turkish Advanced ICT Research Centre (Sahin Albayrak) and Berlin Institute of Technology (Pinar Bilge, Soner Emec, Günther Seliger) on Dec, 6th 2013. Presentations were held by the scientists and experts from Germany (Rita Süssmuth) that support efforts directed to the industry, society and environment with focus on sustainable development. The workshop covered four topics: (1) industrial sectors that grow fast and need R&D, (2) processes that are researched, (3) cooperation between industry, research and universities as well as (4) research funding.

activities with the most needed technologies and R&D services for
sustainable value creation in Turkey are identified. All 70
participants (e.g., Bosch, BSH, Siemens, Mercedes-Benz, Pharma Vision,
Viesmann, Eczac?ba?? Esan, German-Turkish Chamber of Commerce) of the
workshop are interested in further joint activities and playing an
active role in realizing such efforts through a profitable and
sustainable approach by implementation of new technologies and through
research and studies conducted on behalf of industry and public
Academic institutions, aided by industry, generate basic new knowledge from the practice. Academia takes the new knowledge and constructs educational methodologies. Industry applies these to create new products and services. On one hand, industry drives and supports continuing education. On the other hand, it needs employees who are able to understand complex manufacturing systems, to analyze value creation networks and to recognize opportunities for improving.

Since it is an application-oriented engineering discipline, industrial engineering education responds to industry demands and addresses ways to meet challenges in embedding decision-making skills for rapidly changing markets. A recently developed industrial engineering curriculum with an emphasis on sustainable manufacturing will be available at the Turkish-German University in Istanbul after 2014. The curriculum targets combining the breadth of systemic reference for technology with assessment through exemplary in-depth realization of manufacturing processes and equipment. From the industrial engineering perspective, it appears that the required approach is to create solutions in a sustainable way within existing constraints. Economic sustainability can be achieved by selling functionality rather than tangible products. For environmental sustainability, non-renewable resources must be substituted by renewables, but only to the extent that renewables can be regained. Social sustainability improves by teaching according to society’s needs and learning. The learning and teaching methods developed within the TU Berlin Collaborative Research Centre 1026 „Sustainable Manufacturing – Shaping Global Value Creation“ will be integrated in the educational and industrial projects.
