12th Global Conference on Sustainable Manufacturing
Johor Bahru, Malaysia on 22nd – 24th of September 2014
Sustainable Manufacturing is an essential element of future global development. For almost 20 years the chairmen of the Global Conference on Sustainable Manufacturing (GCSM) Prof. Dr.-Ing. Günther Seliger and many members of the International Academy for Production Science (CIRP, www.cirp.net) have been scientifically dealing with according issues. The GCSM is geared towards representatives of science and industry from all over the world. The conference serves as a forum for international research institutes and industrial companies related to the area of sustainable manufacturing alike. It aims at strengthening relations on sustainable manufacturing in the international network by both scientific/educational and industrial cooperation projects. In 2014, more than 150 participants from 30 countries contributed with 136 submissions.
The GCSM is sponsored by the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP, www.cirp.net ). This year’s conference in Malaysia was a follow-up to conferences held at Berlin/Germany, Istanbul/Turkey, St. Petersburg/Russia, and Abu Dhabi University/UAE among others.

The 12th GCSM was held from September 22nd to 24th 2014 at the Malaysian University of Technology (MUT) in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. It covered the topics value creation by sustainable manufacturing, manufacturing processes and equipment, remanufacturing, reuse and recycling, product design for resource efficiency and effectiveness, innovative energy conversion, green supply chain and transportation, adequate environments for entrepreneurial initiative, education for sustainability engineering, and economics for sustainability and development. For the first time the „Blue Responsibility Award: Manufacturing for a Sustainable Terra Preta Sanitation System“ has been awarded for outstanding engineering concepts with regard to Terra Preta. This closed loop sanitation system also formed one of the key topics of the conference’s opening speech by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Günther Seliger.

Post Conference Workshop on Remanufacturing
A full day Post Conference Workshop on „Remanufacturing in Malaysia“ was held at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur on September 25th. The workshop aimed to facilitate GCSM participants for a personal discussion session with Malaysian remanufacturers on the issues and challenges they are facing. The conference also served as an exchange platform between the scientists and the Malaysian government to discuss on specific research projects between industrialized western countries and emerging countries in South East Asia for extended high-tech remanufacturing practices. Especially, newly established laws on producer responsibility demand innovative recycling solutions. Chances for reaching high disassembly depth through manual labor in countries with competitive salaries were identified. Furthermore, the technology transfer of highly automated remanufacturing and recycling systems were discussed.
GCSM Blue Responsibility Award
The GCSM 2014 „Blue Responsibility Award: Manufacturing for a Sustainable Terra Preta Sanitation System“ intended to stimulate the development of new sustainable sanitation systems that enable the reuse of human excreta. The objective of the competition was to design a sanitation system that creates the maximum value from what is today considered as waste (http://www.gcsm.eu/gcsm_award.html ).
The award went to:
- 1st Place with 5000€: Xavier University with the project „Terra Preta Sanitation System for Post Disaster Transitional Communities in the Philippines“
- 2nd Place with 3000€: Collective Disaster with the project „Temple of Holy Shit“
- 3rd Place with 1000€: MAVUNO Project /Ingenieure ohne Grenzen e.V. with the project „CaSa – Carbonization and Sanitation“
- 3rd Place with 1000€: TU Berlin, FH Potsdam with the project „URBAN TERRA PRETA“
- Winning team from Xavier University (Philippines) together with Prof. Seliger

13th GCSM at VGU in HCMC in 2015
For 2015 the conference organizers decided to host the conference in Vietnam. Chairman Prof. Seliger emphasized the role of emerging countries for a sustainable development. Vietnam as one of the upcoming „factories of the world“ has a special responsibility. Vietnam should be enabled to catch up with the Western prosperity without having irresponsible resource consumption, environmental pollution and inadequate work conditions. High-tech solutions in innovative local product and process applications play a major role in local but also global sustainable development. The key for this development is qualification. Thus, foreign companies and universities should act as agents of change to boost sustainable manufacturing. The GCSM 2015 will take place from September 23rd to 25th at VGU, Vietnam; further information will be available soon on the webpage at www.gcsm.eu .
